Perhaps the most seaworthy flying boat ever built, the Do 24 served with both the Allied and the Axis forces, in different roles, and in very different theatres of World War 2. Designed in Nazi Germany to meet a Dutch requirement for a maritime reconnaissance bomber, the elegant tri-motor was put into production in Switzerland and Holland to make it the Dutch navy's principal aerial asset during the Japanese invasion of the East Indies. Whilst surviving aircraft served in the Royal Australian Air Force, production continued in occupied Holland and France for the German Air-Sea Rescue Service, which raved about the Do 24's qualities. By now fully militarised, the Seenot units witnessed the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe over all the European seas, until finally being reduced to evacuation operations in the Baltic in the face of the advancing Red Army. Some Do 24s were supplied to Spain to take over the life-saving work in the Western Mediterranean from the Seenot. The French production line resumed after the war, and 40 Do 24s saw service with the Aéronavale. The Spanish aircraft were finally withdrawn in 1969, thus ending the military career of a remarkable flying boat of the World War 2 era. Osprey Combat Aircraft Series Comprehensive histories of fighting aircraft and their crews, highlighting their vital role in the development of warfare in the 20th and 21st centuries, A unique source of information, researched by recognised experts and brought to life by first-hand accounts from the combat veterans themselves, Concise, authoritative text is supported by at least 30 original colour artworks, specially commissioned scale drawings, and the best archival photography from around the world Book jacket., Perhaps the most seaworthy flying boat ever built, the elegant, tri-motor Dornier Do 24 served with both the Allied and Axis forces in very different parts of the globe during World War 2, garnering an excellent reputation along the way This study uses archival records, first-hand accounts and revealing photographs to illuminate the combat career of this remarkable aircraft for the first time in English. The German-built Do 24 was the Netherlands Navy's principal aerial asset during the Japanese invasion of the East Indies. The type witnessed the rise and fall of the Luftwaffe over all the European seas, took part in the desperate evacuations of Wehrmacht troops on the Baltic in the face of the overwhelming Soviet advance, and was pressed out of service only with the withdrawal of Spanish Do 24s in 1969.
